District Marina Baja / Baixa

Marina Baja / Marina Baixa: The region has about 190,000 inhabitants, without tourists. The extensive coastal region is the heart of the Costa Blanca. It reaches from almost Calpe (already located in the Marina Alta) in the north, to Villajoyosa in the south. Also the tourist metropolis Benidorm is located approximately in the middle of the coastal section. One could now assume that Benidorm with almost 70.000 inhabitants is the biggest city of the district, also the capital. But Villajoyosa, which is only half the size in the south of Comarca Marina Baja, is the capital of the district.

The inland is hilly and then rises to high Sierras. Especially the areas at the foot of the mountains are very attractive. Here there is a refreshing, clear air and it is somewhat cooler than on the coast. This is very pleasant at least in midsummer. The distance to the coast is only about 10 km. And you are also fast in the mountains. The enormous height of the Sierras impresses from sea level seen more than you would expect at 1,000 to 1,400 m altitude. Because a 1,400 m high mountain looks almost as high from sea level as a 3,000 m high mountain if your viewing location is already very high.

The county borders in the north and northeast on the Marina Alta – together the two marinas are often called only les Marines. In the north lies the Comarca Condado de Cocentaina / Comtat. In the northwest there is Hoya de Alyoy / Alcoiá. And in the west borders the city istrict of Campo de Alicante with the provincial capital Alicante to the Marina Baja.

Conclusion Marina Baja

The influence of the Moors is still visible today. The architecture, the tiles / Azulejos, the Valencian language, the fiestas and some customs. Everywhere in the country there are fiestas worth visiting about the history of the Moors and Christians / Moros y Cristianos. These fiestas take place throughout the Valencian region. One of the four large and “official” fiestas is in Marina Baja, in Villajoyosa.

Economically, tourism dominates, at least in the coastal communities. Also many residents have settled down. There is hardly a hill on the coast that is not inhabited by an urbanisation. As a result, the construction industry and crafts have also experienced a great boom. But agriculture still exists. Above all citrus fruits and medlars / Nísperos (emphasis in the area around Callosa d'en Sarriá). Also the traditional chocolate industry in Villajoyosa still exists.

The intensive settlement by Northern and Central Europeans, but increasingly also by Russians, has dark sides. The urban sprawl is visible everywhere and is now borderline. After all, most coastal communities (except Benidorm) were wise enough to limit the number of permitted floors. Thus there are also in the first line at the sea hardly buildings which have more than 6 floors. The Moorish, southern Spanish architecture looks picturesque and playful, even in new buildings. The roof tiles – monk and nun – give the roofs a characteristic appearance. Thus the buildings are usually very pleasing. And if you fancy the hustle and bustle and nightlife, the skyscraper town of Benidorm, located in the middle of the coastline, is easily accessible from anywhere.

The biggest cities and places on the coast are: Benidorm (about 70.000), Villajoyosa (about 35.000), Altea (about 22.000), Alfaz del Pi (with Albir – about 22.000), La Nucia (about 20.000) and Finestrat which borders directly on Benidorm in the south (about 6.000). In the inland and in the mountains there are Callosa de Ensasrriá (over 7,000) and Polop (not quite 5,000).
