Condado de Cocentaina: The northernmost district of the Province of Alicante in the Valencian Community is not located on the Costa Blanca. But in a mountainous region inland. 24 communities with their own administration are comparatively many for a Spanish comarca. Cocentaina is the capital of the whole district and also its eponym. The settlement is thin. Cocentaina has just over 11,000 inhabitants. The entire county only scarcely 30,000.

The county Comtat borders on three alicantine Comarcas. In the south to the Marina Baja and Hoya de Alcoy and in the east to the Marina Alta. The west and north borders the Province of Valencia – the Albaida Valley and Safor. There are extensive oaks and Carrasco pine forests. The whole comarca is blessed with a rich fauna and flora. You will find mouflons, partridges, eagles, griffon vultures and many more. The region is very mountainous, rugged and just wonderful, beautiful.

History of the

The history resembles that of the entire coastal region and the interior of the Costa Blanca. It is strongly influenced by the Moorish influences from 1300 onwards. However, Cocentaina suffered after the reconquest in 1609 especially from a decimated population. Whole regions were depopulated. Many villages were abandoned. Since 1304 this region had been almost exclusively inhabited by Muslims. The repopulation took place from the neighbouring region Valencia. But also Majorcan settlers settled here. They even influenced local dialect with their own language.

Economy

It is still primarily agriculture (especially olives and wine growing). And, concentrated in the Cocentaina area, the textile industry is still alive today. I have rarely seen a city with so few shops in total. But a large number of them are textile shops. There are similar problems as in the neighbouring district of Hoya de Alcoy. The textile industry in Asia is simply too strong and comparatively cheap. In addition, there is the poor infrastructure and the long transport routes to the mountains.

Conclusion

But in the Comtat there are more signs of a delicate domestic tourism. The nature in these mountains is definitely worth seeing and experiencing. In addition, the prices are much cheaper than on the coast. However, there is still no really well developed gastronomy and hotel business. The offer of accommodation is manageable. But just that is a blessing, from my point of view. I like to allow myself a few days in these beautiful mountains. Especially when in August the hustle and bustle in Altea and the search for a parking space and traffic jams get too much for me.

You want to find peace and quiet and of course love wooded heights and a very natural cultural landscape? Then the Comtat is the right place for you. This mountainous inland administrative district is my recommendation for a vacation times differently. With the car you are also in less than one hour at the beach. By bike it's a 4 hour trip. And you have to be well trained because of the gradients. But riding a motorbike here is the crowning glory for me. Because this is really fun on the winding mountain roads. Editors Choice 😉
